Welcome to 2012; a year that’s sure to be filled with great memories, new blessings, and agonizing disappointments. My family is looking forward to the birth of a new baby as my oldest son and his wife welcome a son to their clan. We are also excited about the addition of a daughter-in-law as my middle son has a wedding date planned this summer. As I focus on the enhancements, I'm also reminded of the surprise passing of a friend this past December. He was far too young, and far too healthy at the beginning of 2011 to ever predict the severe outcome. Every person knows death is a reality. Until midlife, however, we live with the illusion that death happens to someone older. When you were a child, a whole line of people ahead of you had to die before you did. Those people, in a sense, protected you from dying. By the time you get to midlife, some of those protective people have been snatched away. You are more vulnerable--you are no longer young--and you are not immortal. These thoughts are normal and will help you make positive changes to focus on the really important stuff of life--relationships.
