| Is Divorce A Major Problem at Midlife? |
The rate of divorce has increased more rapidly among midlife people than among younger couples. In 1964 the number of divorces granted to persons aged forty-five and older was 164,000; in 1974 it had doubled to 315,000; and in 1984 the rate stood at 1,817,382. In the thirty-five to forty-four age group the number divorced increased by nearly 60 percent over the past forty years. But there is good news. Since 1980 the divorce rate has stabilized at about 50 percent for the population as a whole. |
